Generative Methods James Sears and I built a pattern generator by building four electromagnets. We pulsed these magnets to create different patterns with iron filings. The process of coming to our final had three iterations: controlling the iron filings in mineral oil to get a 3-dimensional pattern, putting the iron filings in separate individual pockets, and last, laying them on one piece of vellum so that the four patterns can be shown collectively.
Final Iteration We decided to hide the four electromagnets and the power supply inside a wooden box, and created a vellum screen to put the iron filings on. These electromagnets pulse and create different patterns. We chose to use white vellum instead of the rubylith because of visibility issues.
